It's fun to play. I can see if it had upgrades and maybe different biomes(way out of scope for a game jam) it would be super fun. I somehow managed dig parts of the base :D. The box and tho conveyor.

Is there an easy way to get back to the ground level/base?
Yes. Hold R. You can check controls by pressing ESC.
